One lakh 90 thousand fake and unhealthy ration cards have been canceled.  The move by the government will provide subsidized foodgrains under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) to eligible beneficiaries.  A Food Ministry official said that it was necessary to identify the duplicate ration card.  Prior to 2013, there were a large number of fake and duplicate ration cards.  Over the last seven years the government has tried to prevent fraud in this system.

The official said the digitization of ration cards has helped in making the public distribution system transparent and improving efficiency.

"With the removal of ineligible ration cards, we have been adding new beneficiaries within the coverage defined for each state and union territory," he said.  The Economic Times quoted an official as saying in its report that about 81.35 crore people are benefiting under the National Food Security Act.  This is about two-thirds of the country's population.  At present, about 800 million people receive 5 kg of free foodgrains every month under the Prime Minister's Poor Welfare Food Scheme (PMGKAY).  The government can expand these plans.  The plan was launched in March 2020 to combat the Corona virus epidemic.

"Under NFSA, we supply 42 million tonnes of foodgrains at subsidized rates," the official said.  Wheat is distributed at Rs 2 per kg and rice at Rs 3 per kg.  In addition, we provide 32 million tonnes of free foodgrains per month under PMGKAY.  Grain was also distributed under both the schemes during the Corona period.

The central government has also worked fast on the One Nation One Ration Card scheme.  So that migrant laborers can benefit from it as soon as possible.  Under this scheme, eligible persons from any part of the country can get rations on government subsidy.  So far the government has succeeded in bringing together 28 States and Union Territories under the National Portability Cluster for this scheme.  Whose rightful beneficiary continues to benefit.
